Turkish universities host over 18,000 international students
More than 18,000 international students from 127 countries have chosen to study at universities in Turkey. According to statistics from the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM), the majority of foreign students come from Turkic countries and other countries close to Turkey.
A total of 2,412 international students are studying at Anadolu University, 1,165 at Ankara University, 294 at Boğaziçi University, 541 at Fatih University, 849 at Gazi University, 2,060 at İstanbul University, 1,196 at Marmara University, 1,240 at METU and 796 are studying at Selçuk University.
There is one international student studying at each the following institutions: Adnan Menderes, Afyon Kocapete, Aksaray, Bozok, Çağ, Çankırı Karatekin, Kadir Has, Mehmet Akif Ersoy, Mustafa Kemal, Niğde and İstanbul Kavram Meslek High School. In total, 371 students at military schools and 295 students at the Police Academy are international.
International student numbers are greater from countries in the immediate region and from Turkic countries in particular. Fewer students from Far Eastern countries and other countries at a greater geographical distance from Turkey choose Turkish universities.
There are 2,472 students from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC), 2,307 Azerbaijani, 1,147 Bulgarian, 1,703 Turkmen, 975 Iranian, 899 Mongolian, 850 Greek, 701 Kazak, 581 Afghan, 556 German, 528 Kyrgyz, 518 Bosnian and Herzegovinian, 499 Albanian, 491 from the Russian Federation, 307 Macedonian, 293 Iraqi, 291 Syrian, 262 Georgian, 209 Ukrainian and 174 Chinese students currently studying at Turkish universities.
African countries have the least number of students studying here. There are two from Gabon, seven from Mali, four from Mauritania, 12 from Djibouti, one from Burkina Faso, six from Burundi, five from Ghana, 10 from Guinea, one from Dominica, two from Equatorial Guinea, 12 from Cambodia, 41 from Myanmar, three from Mauritius, 13 from Mozambique, three from the Union of the Comoros, 89 from Tanzania, four from Sierra Leone and one from Cote d'Ivoire studying at Turkish universities. In addition, there are four students in Turkey who are termed “without homeland.”
